Interstate 39/90 expansion resumes between Janesville and Edgerton

Motorists are reminded to be alert and drive with caution through all work zones

Work has resumed along Interstate 39/90 from Kennedy Road near Janesville to south of the Rock River bridges near Newville in Rock County. Nightly lane closures are currently underway between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m. within these limits. Backups and delays are anticipated, and motorists should proceed with caution as crews and equipment work near the travel lanes.
Early next week, all I-39/90 traffic will shift onto the new southbound concrete pavement between Edgerton and Janesville as crews reconstruct and expand the northbound side. Two lanes of traffic will remain open in each direction, with northbound and southbound traffic separated by a median barrier wall. Drivers should be attentive for lane shifts and reduced speed limits through this area.

In conjunction with the Interstate expansion, crews will widen four northbound Interstate bridges spanning Townline Road; Wisconsin & Southern Railroad crossing; County M; and Newville Road. Weather-permitting, bridge removals could begin next week closing each side of the road for two days. Adjacent roadways will not be closed at the same time. Approximate long-term road closures are listed below:
  • Townline Road – mid-March until late April
  • County M – early April to mid-May
  • Newville Road – late April to early June
Motorists must use alternate local routes; the signed detour for County M will use WIS 59 and US 51. The closures are weather and work dependent. Specific dates and times of the closures will be announced via area media and the I-39/90 Project website, www.i39-90.wi.gov.

Weeknight lane closures typically occur between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m. Motorists should plan ahead for potential slowdowns during these activities. All lane restrictions and work operations are weather dependent and subject to change.
